| Description | Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, LD) is intracellular enzyme present in all tissues. LDH catalyzes the reversible conversion of Lactate to Pyruvate using NAD+ as a co-factor. LDH is a tetramer containing two possible forms of subunits: H and M. The result is five isoenzymes termed LD-1 (H4) through LD-5 (M4). The isoenzymes are present in different proportion in each tissue and have different electrophoresis mobility, what is very useful for diagnostic. The LDH level rises within 24 - 72 hours after myocardial infarction, peaks in 3 - 4 days, and returns to normal in about 5-10 days. Elevated values in serum are also encountered in cases of pulmonary embolism, renal disease, in toxic hepatitis with jaundice. Hodking´s disease and lung cancers elevations are specially high. Moderate increases are also observed in cases of liver disease, intestinal problems, and skeletal muscle disease and injury, such as muscular dystrophy and recent muscular trauma. |
